Look at this color, lime green, fabulous. My mother loved chrysanthemums, especially in shades of orange. Her fall favorite.

Hawaiian Iris
A spidery purple and white flower from Hawaii. The varieties of flowers in Hawaii include some that are found nowhere else in the world. On top of Haleakala is a grass that is a new plant form on this earth. New life in abundance and smelling deliciously sweet.

Orchids at one of Oahu's Botanical Gardens
Orchids from Oahu's Botanical Gardens. The orchids in Hawaii are lush and vivid in color. On the big island, I wandered through a botanical garden that was jungly, big flowers, large leaves, paths growing in on themselves. Beautiful, fragrant, humid, alive. All of it amazing.

Hawaiian Hibiscus
Although hibiscus love the tropics, they are also lovely potted and set on porches during the summer. There are many varieties, some with flowers the size of saucers. They continue to bloom through the winter if you bring them inside--that is, if you don't live in the tropics.
Hawaiian Flowers
Pumeria are fragrant flowers used in leis. The experience of wearing a lei is like nothing I have every had before in my life. There is the softness of the flower petals against the skin, the sweet fragrance, the delicacy, yet weight of the flowers around the neck. If you ever get the chance to wear one, be sure to.
Flower Power
Caracas, Venezuela. These colorful flowers look like a daisy or zinnias to me. And I'm pretty sure the color is forced. We used to put carnations in water colored with food coloring added. You could turn a white carnation blue if you wanted.

Color Spike
Tropical bromolaid. In Hawaii, they grow everywhere, many varieties, many colors. The pineapple is a good example of this plant. You can cut the top off of a pineapple and stick it in a pot of soil and it will grow. It makes a lovely house plant.

Backlit Yellow Rose Interior
I painted a yellow rose twining through rustic fence for a friend of mine named Rose. We'd both lost our brothers in accidents. It was in the 80s. It was a sad time for us, losing not only a sibling, but part of our identity. The rose was sweet, fresh, idyllic. She loved it.

I had a white iris growing on my Glendon garden that quit producing flowers. I'm curious about why this happened. The soil was right, damp, and the light conditions right--although it did grow at the shadier end of the garden. The other Japanese irises spread from the middle, their roots growing out from the center of the clump. Eventually they have a hole in the middle of the clump. They are easy to divide, just dig up the roots and make new plantings.

Heart of a Iris
Georgia O'Keefee painted the interiors of flowers. She spent time one winter while others were on Christmas break, sitting on the floor of the empty art room, drawing passionately, feeling her feelings on the paper. People said her art depicted woman. The Japanese Iris blooms in the spring. The flowers don't last long, but they are delicate and lovely, like a many women are.
Painted Church Garden Orchid
This beautiful orchid was photographed by Nurse Betty on the big Island of Hawaii. Thirty-seven years ago, I flew to Hawaii for a vacation with my first husband. We each received a basket with a tiny bottle of wine in it, a lovely lunch, and a purple orchid. How flying has changed.
